When do the proposed savings become cash, and what work is required to realize them? This original fictional exercise focuses on separating an acquisition screen from an investment conclusion. The task is to build a synergy ramp, cost schedule and diligence-question log, not copy a confident conclusion. It is not a live recommendation, client record or employer assessment.
The inputs and the question
Corporate-development screening starts with strategic fit, a consistent financial view and unresolved diligence. The original case below examines synergy timing. It does not value a live company or imply that a target should be acquired.
| Supplied item | Fictional input |
|---|---|
| Claimed annual run-rate savings | 6 million |
| Year-one realized savings | 2 million |
| Year-two realized savings | 3 million |
| Year-three realized savings | 6 million |
| Year-one integration payment | 8 million |
Use the supplied inputs together. When dates, units or definitions are not given, identify the gap rather than silently filling it with a convenient assumption. An actual assignment may require more detail than this deliberately limited case.
Work through the base case
Under the supplied undiscounted schedule, year-one net cash is 2 − 8 = −6 million. Year two adds 3, bringing cumulative cash to −3. Year three adds 6, bringing it to +3. A 6 million run-rate claim is not 6 million of cash in every year.
This limited schedule omits discounting, taxes, additional investment and implementation probability. Those omissions prevent it from being a transaction valuation. Its purpose is to expose the difference between a steady-state claim and the cash path needed to achieve it.
The arithmetic or evidence check is only one part of the answer. Explain the definition that makes it valid and what remains outside the exercise. Do not convert a result from this case into a claim about a real company, market or client.
Change the assumption and follow the consequence
If realized savings are half of the schedule, the three-year cumulative amount is 1 + 1.5 + 3 − 8 = −2.5 million. State whether the integration cost also changes; do not automatically halve every input.
Keep the unchanged inputs visible. State whether the change is an observed fact or a scenario you introduced. If the information needed to calculate a fuller result is missing, say what you would request instead of manufacturing precision.
The interpretation to avoid
Adding the full run-rate saving to year-one earnings or assigning all integration costs to a footnote overstates what the first period supports.
A useful response names the limitation without abandoning the task. Show the part you can establish, then explain the condition or document needed for the next conclusion. Being explicit about that boundary is different from refusing to reason about the case.
Build the evidence artifact
Create a diligence log linking each saving to an owner, implementation dependency, date, evidence and downside. Separate strategic logic from modeled economics.
Answer these questions before presenting it:
- Which savings are incremental rather than already in the standalone forecast?
- Who must execute the changes and what constraints apply?
- What costs, taxes and reinvestment are missing from the screen?
For your own practice, write the supplied facts, your method, the base result, the changed assumption and one unresolved question on a single page. Label professional work, public-data projects and fictional exercises accurately. Remove confidential data and do not use the example to imply a decision you did not own.
What to use next
Use the corporate development preparation guide to connect the exercise to a readiness and next-resource decision. Compare the adjacent preparation task if your gap is different. The primary-source background supplies concept or role context; the facts and worked exercise above are original and fictional.
The existing technical guide supports valuation foundations; it is not a dedicated corporate-development course. Inspect scope before choosing support. A readable and reproducible explanation is the immediate objective; this case does not promise an interview, qualification, investment result or a particular search ranking.
