Which driver changed the forecast, and which next action does the evidence support? This original fictional exercise focuses on turning a forecast bridge into an operational discussion. The task is to build a reconciled contribution bridge and a forecast decision note, not copy a confident conclusion. It is not a live recommendation, client record or employer assessment.
The inputs and the question
A finance business partner has to make a financial explanation usable by an operating team. This guide tests a transparent contribution bridge and a decision conversation. It does not assume that a title gives you authority to change prices or spending.
| Supplied item | Fictional input |
|---|---|
| Baseline volume and price | 1,000 units at 50 |
| Baseline unit variable cost | 30 |
| Forecast volume and price | 1,100 units at 52 |
| Forecast unit variable cost | 31 |
Use the supplied inputs together. When dates, units or definitions are not given, identify the gap rather than silently filling it with a convenient assumption. An actual assignment may require more detail than this deliberately limited case.
Work through the base case
Baseline contribution is 1,000 × (50 − 30) = 20,000. Forecast contribution is 1,100 × (52 − 31) = 23,100. The increase is 3,100. Under this stated bridge order, volume contributes 2,000, price 2,200 and unit-cost change −1,100.
The components reconcile: 2,000 + 2,200 − 1,100 = 3,100. This is a contribution calculation, not net profit; fixed costs, taxes and working capital are omitted. The bridge order affects how interacting drivers are allocated, so label the method.
The arithmetic or evidence check is only one part of the answer. Explain the definition that makes it valid and what remains outside the exercise. Do not convert a result from this case into a claim about a real company, market or client.
Change the assumption and follow the consequence
If volume is only 950 with the same forecast price and cost, contribution is 950 × 21 = 19,950. The pricing change does not by itself establish that the forecast improves on the 20,000 baseline.
Keep the unchanged inputs visible. State whether the change is an observed fact or a scenario you introduced. If the information needed to calculate a fuller result is missing, say what you would request instead of manufacturing precision.
The interpretation to avoid
Reporting a revenue increase as a profit increase, or presenting a bridge without its order, obscures the economics. A forecast is not evidence that the operating change has happened.
A useful response names the limitation without abandoning the task. Show the part you can establish, then explain the condition or document needed for the next conclusion. Being explicit about that boundary is different from refusing to reason about the case.
Build the evidence artifact
Give the partner a reconciled bridge, the assumption at risk and a concrete information request. Separate an observed variance from a proposed action and its owner.
Answer these questions before presenting it:
- Is the volume forecast based on orders, shipments or a scenario?
- Which variable and fixed costs are included?
- What operational evidence supports a price or volume change?
For your own practice, write the supplied facts, your method, the base result, the changed assumption and one unresolved question on a single page. Label professional work, public-data projects and fictional exercises accurately. Remove confidential data and do not use the example to imply a decision you did not own.
What to use next
Use the finance business partner preparation guide to connect the exercise to a readiness and next-resource decision. Compare the adjacent preparation task if your gap is different. The primary-source background supplies concept or role context; the facts and worked exercise above are original and fictional.
The existing FP&A workbook supports forecast and case practice; it is not a promise of employer questions. Inspect scope before choosing support. A readable and reproducible explanation is the immediate objective; this case does not promise an interview, qualification, investment result or a particular search ranking.
