If a Summer 2028 application opens before your first finance internship, apply with evidence of what you have already done. Do not fill the gap with invented deal work or projected responsibilities. First check the role's requirements; then build the strongest truthful application your current experience supports.
The cycle is early enough to create this problem: the Evercore New York 2028 posting accepts applications in fall 2026. That fact does not imply internship experience is irrelevant, or that every student without it qualifies. Read the complete posting and your graduation window.
Build an evidence ladder
Start with the strongest real work you can explain under questioning. A title is less useful if you cannot describe your own contribution.
| Evidence you have | What it can demonstrate | Boundary to preserve |
|---|---|---|
| Completed internship or part-time work | Accuracy, ownership, client service, deadlines or analysis | State your own tasks and observed results |
| Coursework or an independent finance project | Analytical method, assumptions and communication | Label it academic or independent, not professional transaction work |
| Student organization responsibility | Coordination, budget control or research | Do not imply a club portfolio was a client fund |
| Confirmed future internship | A genuine next step in your development | Label it incoming and avoid accomplishments that have not occurred |
| Planned project or application | An intention | Complete the work before using it as evidence |
For a candidate without a completed finance internship, an independent project can create something concrete to discuss. It cannot replace a required qualification or guarantee an interview.
An annotated project example
Suppose you actually compare two public companies for a class or independent project. A defensible description might be:
Built a comparison of two public companies using their latest annual filings; reconciled operating-margin differences and presented how lease treatment affected comparability.
This is a hypothetical example. Use it only if you did that work. Notice the three parts: source (annual filings), action (comparison and reconciliation), and judgment (why accounting treatment matters). There is no fictional client, deal value or investment return.
Be ready to explain which figures you used, what needed adjustment and what you could not conclude. If you cannot answer those questions, revise the claim or finish the analysis. The SEC's guide to reading a 10-K is a primary-source starting point for understanding the filing sections.
How to describe an incoming role
Once an offer is confirmed and any disclosure restrictions are understood, use an accurate title, employer and future dates, clearly marked Incoming. Do not add bullets claiming you executed transactions, built models or delivered results before starting. If asked about it, distinguish why you selected the role from what you have already learned elsewhere.
If the position is only an application, interview or verbal possibility, do not present it as a confirmed job. A prospective role belongs in your private planning, not as completed experience on a resume.
Keep applying and building in parallel
Create two lists. The first contains eligible live applications and their actual deadlines. The second contains evidence you can build: a completed analysis, improved accounting understanding or a clearer explanation of work you already did. Use the application tracker for the first, and a short work log for the second.
Do not delay a valid application indefinitely while waiting for an ideal internship. Equally, do not submit an unchecked document simply because another candidate says speed is everything. Follow the employer's review policy, including the Evercore-specific rules, rather than assuming every process is rolling.
Use the resume checklist for formatting and accuracy, and the guide to building a finance profile without campus recruiting for broader experience development. The 2028 recruiting hub connects these tasks to the rest of your preparation.
Paid resume help can improve the presentation of real evidence. It cannot create experience, waive eligibility requirements or promise a hiring outcome.
