A research packet for a hedge fund internship should make your judgment inspectable. It does not need to pretend that you have managed client capital. The useful question is whether a reader can see the research question, evidence, method and limit of your work. Match the packet to the role rather than sending one generic stock pitch everywhere.
Verify the mandate first
Read the employer’s current posting and instructions. Record the strategy, role, office, eligibility, application method and any requested assessment. A fundamental-equity note may fit one team and be irrelevant to a systematic research role. A job-board listing is a discovery lead; it is not confirmation that the role remains open.
Build a one-page packet
| Field | What to put in it | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Question | One testable business or data question | A broad claim that you can outperform |
| Evidence | Dated public sources and the supplied dataset | Private client files or unsourced figures |
| Method | The steps another reader could inspect | A spreadsheet with hidden assumptions |
| Finding | What the analysis supports, within its limits | Turning a forecast into a realized result |
| Counterargument | The observation that could make you wrong | Only listing upside |
| Ownership | Your contribution, clearly labeled | Implying employment or client responsibility |
For fictional fundamental-equity research, a question might be whether margin improvement reflects a durable operating change or a temporary comparison period. Explain the source dates and the evidence needed to distinguish those explanations. A numerical target without that reasoning is not a complete thesis.
For fictional quantitative work, explain a data-quality check, a validation split and a failed hypothesis. A model that does not hold out of sample can still show disciplined research if you describe the failure honestly. Do not call an optimized historical test live trading performance.
Make the packet usable
Use a readable PDF or clearly organized public artifact only when the employer permits a work sample. Test access without your own sign-in, remove identifying or confidential information, label the date and version, and give sources enough context to be checked. Do not attach a large model to an unsolicited message when a concise description would suffice.
A fictional outreach example
Hello, I’m applying through the stated channel for the research internship. My public-data project examines whether a company’s margin change is recurring; the note separates source facts, assumptions and a downside. If additional work samples are accepted, is a short research note relevant to this role? Thank you for the process guidance.
This is an original fictional example, not a message to send automatically. Adjust it to the actual role and permissions. Do not imply a referral, prior conversation or investment result that did not occur. Follow any no-contact instruction, and do not use outreach as a substitute for a required application.
Keep a source-verified tracker
Record the employer source URL, when you checked it, the deadline if actually stated, eligibility, channel, submitted status and next action. An acknowledgment is not an interview invitation. Silence is not a verified rejection. The tracker should reduce confusion rather than encourage repeated messages.
